Workshops For Youth
Our theatre workshops are designed to inspire creativity in youth ages 4 – 17. Taught by some of the finest professional theatre artists in the Twin Cities, our summer and winter workshops focus on the techniques of drama, music and dance. Students are taught to explore and express their own individuality and build self-confidence through the performing arts.

Ages 4 to 6
Location: Hopkins Center for the Arts
Cost: $110 per workshop per student, $90 for each additional workshop per student

Seuss on Stage
Explore the wild, weird and wacky worlds of Dr. Seuss in this high-energy class for crazy characters. Young actors will use rhyme and rhythm to bring to life fun and freaky folks like Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Yertle the Turtle and more!

Diaries of a Worm, Spider and Fly
Imagine the life of tiny creatures all around you! Inspired by the popular series by Doreen Cronin, students will explore the diaries of a worm, spider and fly to see how their trials and tribulations are much like our own. Using the beginning actor’s tools, a creative voice, body and imagination, young actors will discover qualities of cooperation, character, and courage as they bring their favorite daily entries to life!

Gone to the Dogs
Join Clifford the Big Red Dog, Biscuit, Lassie, and more as kids learn creative dramatics through these classic dog stories. Kids will have a howling good time digging into books like Go, Dog, Go or Pokey Little Puppy. With creative voices, bodies, and imaginations kids can become clever and lovable mutts like Toto, Fido, or more!

Mermaid Magic
Dive into an under-the-sea adventure filled with stories of mermaids like Princess Ariel, little fishes like Nemo, and maybe even some big, bad sharks. Using creative dramatics, music and movement young actors breathe life into exciting tales of the worlds beneath the waves.

Flight to Fairyland
Mischievous, clever and magical fairies come to life in this exciting creative dramatics class. With a flick of a wand, young actors will use their voices and bodies to transform themselves into rare and marvelous creatures. Clap your hands and BELIEVE!

Eligibility: All students must be at least four-years-old or older by the first day of workshops to register.
Lunch supervision: If a child is registered for a full day of workshops then an adult must come to the Hopkins Center for the Arts to share lunch with the child.
Final presentations: Thursday evening (for sessions #1, #5, #6, #7 and #8); Friday - daytime (for sessions #2, #3 and #4).

Rock the Stage – The King and Queens of Pop
What happens when you mash up the best-selling solo rock artist of all time, Elvis Presley, and the daring divas of American pop? In the tradition of glee clubs and show choirs across the country, Stages Theatre Company directors and choreographers will work with students to adapt music from The King’s vast and varied catalog and from stupendous singers like Aretha Franklin, Cher, and Madonna to create unique and original musical stories for the stage. Each workshop also includes master classes such as different dance styles, voice training, or choreography. Friends and family are invited to a portion of the final workshop day for a sharing of skills learned.

Beauty and the Beast
Be our Guest as we sing and dance our way through this tale as old as time! Stages Theatre Company Teaching Artists will guide students as they retell their favorite scenes and learn songs and dances from Disney’s record-breaking musical version of this classic fairy tale. Each workshop also includes master classes such as different dance styles, voice training, or choreography. Friends and family are invited to a portion of the final workshop day for a sharing of skills learned.

The Adventures of Robin Hood
Outwit your enemies with acts of derring-do! Students recreate exciting tales of Robin Hood, Maid Marian, and their merry band as they foil the dastardly plans of the evil Sherriff of Nottingham. Each workshop also includes master classes across a wide range of topics best-suited for the aspiring young actor. Friends and family are invited to a portion of the final workshop day for a sharing of skills learned.

Over the Rainbow
Calling all characters from the wild, weird and wonderful world of Oz! In this workshop, Stages Theatre Company Teaching Artists will guide students as they create characters and scenes gleaned from Baum’s 13-book series as well as stage and screen adaptations. Students then leap into learning songs and dances from the famous The Wizard of Oz movie musical as well as the record-breaking Broadway musical Wicked. Each workshop also includes master classes such as different dance styles, voice training, or choreography. Friends and family are invited to a portion of the final workshop day for a sharing of skills learned.

Page to Stage: Vamps and Wolves
Stories of vampires and werewolves have always haunted the human imagination. Now, Stages Theatre Company Teaching Artists will guide students as they create characters and scenes inspired by the old and new – from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Remus Lupin in Harry Potter to the recent hit series, Twilight. Grab your favorite graphic novel, pack up your favorite monster books, and get your mob on! Each workshop also includes master classes across a wide range of topics best-suited for the aspiring young actor. Friends and family are invited to a portion of the final workshop day for a sharing of skills learned.

The Jukebox Musical: Broadway Rock and Pop
What do John Lennon, Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Billy Joel, ABBA, Bob Dylan, and the Barenaked Ladies have in common? They’re all part of the hot new trend on Broadway – the jukebox musical, where dance and story are crafted around existing pop music. As students explore and prepare selections for a stunning rock and pop musical revue, they will work with some of the finest artists in the Twin Cities to hone their “triple threat” skills in singing, dancing, and acting.

Handling Fees
A $5 handling fee will be assessed to the first class for each student registered for classes/workshops.
Multiple Workshop Discount
The first workshop for each student is at full price. All additional workshops are discounted--use the drop-down menu when registering online to select the correct price.
