BECOME AN STC VOLUNTEER

Volunteers play a vital role and make a difference.

On behalf of all of us at Stages Theatre Company, thank you for considering us. We seek volunteers to usher at performances, serve as Board and Committee members, to work on special projects including office. See below for current needs.

Your generous time will contribute to our serving an annual average of 130,000 children and families.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Ushering (ages 12+)

Most of our volunteers get involved by ushering for performances. We have nearly 300 performances and about 95,000 audience members every year, each of whom needs to get from the parking lot to their seat. We rely almost exclusively on volunteers to make this possible.

Usher Responsibilities Include:

  • Tearing tickets
  • Distributing show programs
  • Assisting audience members to their seats
  • Quickly walking through the theater after performances to pick up programs

As a thank you, we provide Ushers with ticket vouchers to see future Stages Theatre Company productions, an invite to the annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet, along with other perks and benefits.

GUIDELINES FOR USHERING

Scheduling is a first come, first served basis.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • For the safety of the children and families we serve, please note that all volunteers must agree to a Child Protection Background Check. Cost for this is covered by Stages Theatre Company.
  • Volunteer ushering requires you to be on your feet and able to move up and down stairs. Some light lifting may be required. Volunteer Usher hours vary. Time commitment is usually 2 hrs per shift.
  • We understand conflicts & emergencies arise, however, 2 no-shows to scheduled usher shifts could result in removal from the volunteer program. We rely on our ushers to be present and up to the task at hand for entire shift providing excellent customer service to our patrons.

Office Work (ages 16+)

On an as-needed-basis: Office duties typically require working with files, organizing data, scanning photos & documents, making copies and computer data entry when applicable.   Office work hours are weekdays between 9:00am and 3:00pm, when needed.

Miscellaneous Projects (ages 16+)

1. Events require very hands on volunteers. Responsibilities can include (but are not limited to) setting up and breaking down materials, working at information and will-call tables, handing out resources, etc. Each event has unique elements and responsibilities vary accordingly. When you volunteer for particular events, STC will always welcome you to stay and enjoy that event.

2. We always have projects that require special expertise, particularly in the areas of volunteer management, set building, costume shop ambassadors, etc. If you have special talents and interests in these areas, we'd like to talk with you. Miscellaneous project hours vary according to the project.

VOLUNTEER STANDING OVATION OF THE MONTH

This month we honor Mariann Wolf for her volunteerism to Stages. Mariann is a multi-talented member of our Volunteer program. Most audiences encounter Mariann twice when the visit us. First as an usher, assisting audience members to their seats and providing exceptional costumer service. Mariann also volunteers several hours a week in our scene shop helping our scenic artists paint the sets for each show. Learn more about Mariann and check back often as we continue to honor our wonderful volunteers.

VOLUNTEER Q&A with MARIANN WOLF

Q: How long have you been volunteering with Stages?

A: I started volunteering at Stages in late September 2014.

Q: What types of volunteering do you do with Stages?

A: I wear a couple of different volunteer hats. On Wednesdays, you can find me ushering during the morning performances. I also occasionally usher on Friday nights, accompanied by my 13-year old daughter, Sara.  In addition to my ushering duties, I volunteer 1 or 2 days a week in the scene shop, helping the staff with whatever projects need to get done - no two days are ever the same!

Q: What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

A: I like ushering because I love to see the kids' faces when they catch their first glimpse of the stage/set when they enter the theater, and get then to hear their reactions to the performance as they head out the door afterward.  I like working in the scene shop because I get to be hands-on in creating the experiences that the audience members come to Stages to enjoy.

Q: Would you recommend volunteering at Stages to friends and family?

A: Absolutely! I have already recruited my daughter and one of her friends to usher, as well as one of my friends. Everyone at Stages - the office staff, the production team, all of the volunteers - are very welcoming. It really is fun to work here.

We conservatively estimate that approximately 300 volunteers donate about 5,000 hour’s worth of service each year to Stages Theatre Company. As we have grown, maintaining and developing a strong base of well-trained, committed volunteers has become increasingly important to us.
