Mary Poppins Q & A : Kim Willow (Music Director)

Meet Kimberly Willow

WHAT DOES A MUSIC DIRECTOR DO? The music director is responsible for working with the stage director in preparing a theatre production for public performance, including casting, rehearsing the cast. Courtesy of Wikipedia

INTERESTING OR UNIQUE CHALLENGE ON THIS PRODUCTION:  The most challenging part of this production musically, is mastering this huge score.  It’s a big show!  When there’s so much music, it takes a lot of focus and practice to keep every detail on point.

FAVORITE SONG FROM THE SHOW:  Let’s Go Fly a Kite

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COME SEE THIS SHOW: Mary Poppins is a magical story about what’s really important in life, and I think we could all use a “spoonful of sugar” right now!

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB IN THIS PRODUCTION:  My favorite part of music directing is when, after we’ve learned a piece, we go back through and add the ‘wow factor’.  Musical theatre isn’t just about accurate melodies and rhythms, it’s about telling the story through music, and I really enjoy coaching that through musical style.  I love to see cast members get excited after hearing what can happen when we add those special touches.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THEATRE?  I started in dance as a young kid, and quickly added piano, flute, choir, drama, speech – whatever I could get my hands on!  I grew to love singing, dancing and acting the most, and found the perfect place for that in Musical Theatre.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A STUDENT THINKING ABOUT A CAREER LIKE YOURS IN THE THEATRE:  Practice, practice, practice, practice and then…practice!  Find excellent teachers and study everything you can!  A lot of people believe that theatre is mostly talent-based.  While natural talents do come into play, I believe your ability to succeed lies far more in how hard you’re willing to work.  Lastly, I would say always keep a positive attitude.  Art looks different on different people, and the first thing to crush it is negativity.  Allow yourself and others a positive environment to work, play and create!
