WHAT DOES A LIGHTING DESIGNER DO? A theatre lighting designer works with the director, choreographer, set designer, costume designer, and sound designer to create the lighting, atmosphere, and time of day for the production in response to the text, while keeping in mind issues of visibility, safety, and cost. INTERESTING OR UNIQUE CHALLENGE ON THIS PRODUCTION: This will be my first production at the Stages so it will be a unique and interesting for me to be working in the space the first time.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB IN THIS PRODUCTION: Working with new people in the industry and working with Sarah the scenic designer again. Sarah and I are colleges from Minnesota State University Moorhead and have not worked together in awhile.
FAVORITE SONG FROM THE SHOW: Step in Time
WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COME SEE THIS SHOW: To support local theater and a great organization.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THEATRE? While in college I could take a public speaking course or a technical theater course to fulfill a credit needed. I chose technical theater. That was 24 years ago and I have been doing theater ever sense.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A STUDENT THINKING ABOUT A CAREER LIKE YOURS IN THE THEATRE: Work hard, seek out a respected mentor to learn from, be positive and have drive.

Jeff Brown is a freelance scenic & lighting designer, exhibit designer, and owner of BrownKnows Design. Jeff served as Production Manager for the Duluth Playhouse from 2007-2014 and has more than 20 years of theater experience as a designer, technical director, and production manager.
