Q&A with : Sarah Hohenstein Burk (Musical Director)

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your working processSarahB

For call-back auditions, I typically look for the compatibility of an actor’s voice with the songs of the character that person is being considered for. But this play is more of an ensemble piece, so casting choices involved more attention to the timbre and personality of the group in the folk style of the music.

The process also involves working with the composer (Blake Thomas) to tweak aspects of the score and the soundtrack such as cues and timing. It’s a matter of working out the unforeseen bugs that are exposed in the rehearsal process of a new play.”

Q: What is a particularly interesting or unusual challenge on this project and how are you setting out to solve it?

A: World premiers are always exciting, because we have the privilege of birthing the vision of the playwright and composer into a dynamic existence. The play comes to life, but it also grows a life of its own. So, it’s paramount to respect the writers’ vision and intent while allowing the piece to reveal itself through its enactment. There is a line between the fundamental elements of the play and the needs of our unique production.

The structure of this play is not that of a “”typical”” musical with scenes comprised of big song and dance numbers. Much of the music serves as tuneful punctuation in the telling of the story. So, we’ve worked to be ready for each injection of song with an energetic and convincing delivery.”

Q: What in your childhood got you to where you are today?

A: Education and opportunities.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job in this production?

A: My joy working on any production at Stages Theatre ALWAYS comes from collaborating with highly talented, creative, professional and respectful people.

Q: Favorite Color

A: Probably red because I associate it with a tune my mother would bust into when I wore red: “The lady in red, the fellas are crazy ’bout the lady in red. She’s a bit gaudy, but lawdy, what a personality!”

Q: Favorite Quote

A: “I always miss 100% of the shots I didn’t take.” (Wayne Gretzky)

Q: Favorite Winter Activity (either as a kid or now)

A: I can only pick one favorite? Ice skating, cross-country skiing, tromping through deep snow in my Mukluks.

Come hear the toe-tapping tunes of BEAR SNORES ON!
